About the Journal

A local publication about fishing and time on the water around Captree, on Long Island's South Shore.

The Captree Fishing Journal is for people who want to make a day of it: readers who fish, readers who used to, and readers who mostly like being near the water while someone else does. We cover one stretch of water: Captree State Park's boat basin at the east end of Jones Island, Fire Island Inlet, the Great South Bay and the ocean just outside, along with the South Shore towns where the boats and tackle shops are, from Babylon to Bay Shore.

Who publishes it

The Captree Fishing Journal is published by Anglers LLC. Anglers LLC also publishes noreaster.com, a fishing-reports and conditions site for the Northeast. The two sites share a publisher and editorial standards. The Journal is written and edited as a Captree publication in its own right.

What we publish

  • Guides. Longer, sourced pieces on fishing out of Captree: the boat basin and the fleet, the piers, and New York's saltwater rules.
  • Boats & shops. A short editorial directory of Captree-area party boats, charters and tackle shops. It links to each business's own site and is dated when checked.
  • Tides. NOAA predictions for the Fire Island Coast Guard Station (8515186), about a mile from the boat basin, plus the National Weather Service forecast.
  • Stories and almanac. Shorter pieces on local history and places.

That's the whole publication.

How we source what we publish

We fail closed. If we can't attribute a claim about fish, water temperature, a catch, a regulation or a business to a named source, we don't print it. An empty report page is better than an invented one.

In practice:

  • Every factual claim has a source. Catch reports link to the exact original post, whether that's a boat's own report page, a tackle shop, or a newspaper or magazine column. We quote no more than a line or two from any source and write the rest in our own words.
  • We say when we weren't there. Most of our reporting comes from public reports and official data. When nobody from the Journal was on the boat or the beach, the piece says so in a "How we reported this" or "How we compiled this" note.
  • Regulations come from NYSDEC. We link to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's official pages and date any numbers we quote. Always check the current rules before you keep a fish.
  • Prices, schedules and access rules come from the businesses and agencies that set them. We date them, and when we can't confirm something, we leave it out.
  • We don't republish private posts. We don't copy posts from private or closed social-media groups. We don't name private anglers without their permission.

AI labeling

Some digests are drafted by software from publicly posted material and then reviewed and edited by a person. Where that's the case, the page says so plainly in its source note. We never present AI-assisted writing as first-hand reporting. Some illustrative images on the site are AI-generated, and they're labeled as such on our Credits page.

Advertising and independence

The Journal may carry advertising. Ads are labeled "Advertisement" and kept separate from editorial content. Advertisers don't review or influence what we publish. Directory listings and Recommended links are editorial: they can't be bought, and they aren't affiliate links. See our Terms & disclosures and Privacy Policy.

Corrections

If something here is wrong, whether a schedule, a name, or a detail about your boat or shop, tell us through our Contact page. We'll fix it and note the correction on the page.
